Iron-Based Shape Memory Alloy Database

You must apply through the external link. This position is onsite. Please apply by November 11, 2022 for best consideration.

Core Competency: Materials and Structures for Extreme Environments
Seeking self-motivated individuals to join our NASA- GRC shape memory alloy (SMA) research team in the development of Fe-based shape memory alloy database. The applicant will be tasked with extracting data and metadata from already collected Fe-based shape memory alloys publications. Given a template, the applicant will be responsible for organizing data methodically into groups and subgroups based on the elemental additions, processing methods or other clusters.
The task includes:
1. Review articles and organize them into sub-groups based on binary, ternary, or higher elemental addition.
2. Extract data and metadata from each article and input into a provided template.
3. Use MATLAB algorithms to visualize data, create plots and find trends (code writing expected)
4. Develop processing maps for each alloy category and each processing technique, find overlaps if any. Such maps will be guided with data and the appropriate theories.
5. Write a handbook section on Fe-based alloys (format will be provided).
6. Optional (and if time permits): propose candidate Fe-based alloy for melting. perform necessary characterization.
7. Optional (and if time permits): Explore Cu-based alloys

Expected outcomes:
(a) Research: Selected applicants will be exposed to world class research and development of shape memory alloys and their applications. At the end of the session, applicants are required to demonstrate (in form of report or presentation) capability of conducting research on the current topic
(b) Final Report: Interns are required to submit a final project report for their internship activities. The report can include a summary of the project’s technical goals and objectives; manuals or data sheets resulting from the work, databases, or specific accomplishments made.

Eligibility requirements:

  • U.S. Citizen
  • Cumulative 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale)
  • Full-time students (high school through graduate)
  • Enrollment in a degree granting institution
  • 16 years of age at the time of application (no exceptions)
