Duties:


As a Public Health Nutritionist GS-0630-13, your typical work assignments may include the following:
  • Identify, monitor, analyze, and synthesize current information from national, state, tribal, and local public agency databases, and other sources regarding local, state, tribal and federal nutrition program issues.
  • Create, combine, and update databases and research tools that evaluate and improve outreach, summer and school meals, and network needs.
  • Communicate the results of research, policy and data analysis through policy briefs, publications, web postings, presentations, and other means.
  • Provide technical assistance and training on current hunger and poverty data and public policy issues to agency staff.
  • Research, design, and establish culturally informed school and detention center menus which utilize Indigenous knowledge, ingredients, and suppliers.
  • Monitor relevant research sources and produce summaries and alerts about key new studies for dissemination to staff, advocates, and policymakers.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the qualification requirements contained in the OPM Standards. For this position, they are listed below.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in the fields of dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, or related science in an educational program must have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
OR
Completion of a coordinated undergraduate program, internship, or other clinical component approved by AND (formerly ADA) for dietitians or nutritionists.
OR
Professional registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).

In addition to meeting the Basic Requirement, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications requirements below.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.

GS-13: One (1) year of specialized experience that equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. This experience is related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service. Examples include: Independently assess, counsel and administer a nutrition program. Conduct extensive research (i.e. assessments, write reports and evaluate surveys) and business in the food and nutrition industry in efforts to improve nutrition programs. Interprets food and nutrition legislation. Consults and communicates at the federal, state and local levels (i.e. Tribal communities) to establish, improve, and maintain quality nutrition. Identifies and reports on issues related to anti-hunger activism and poverty. Provides technical information such as nutrition statistics related to federal nutrition programs.

Education
