Office of Performance Management Graduate Intern

Position Description:
You would be joining a fun & fabulous emerging Community of Practice within the PWD’s Office of Performance Management (PWD OPM) that is focused on using data and business intelligence to innovate and improve service delivery.

Serving the entire Public Works Department, the PWD Office of Performance Management exists to brings people together to guide, unify, and promote innovation to make Austin a better city to live and work in.

Your role would be to contribute your data science and communications skills to our growing & exciting portfolio of projects that are all ultimately about making government work better for the people & community. Project types include but are not limited to: creating cool reports and presentations that visualize data so that our executives, leaders, and staff can easily see trends and make decisions; creating workflow documentation that will help street and bridge field crews repair Austin’s roads more effectively.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Researching, gathering, summarizing, analyzing, and presenting qualitative and quantitative data
  • Synthesizing large amounts of information and providing recommendations based on findings
  • Creating attractive and useful data visualizations
  • Writing clear, succinct, effective communication for diverse audiences

Days and Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Hours may vary depending on work demands and business needs.

Travel:
The Public Works Department is comprised of multiple facilities located throughout Austin. If you are selected for this position, and meet the Driver Safety Standards in the City of Austin Driver Safety Program, you may drive when necessary to different locations as part of your regular job duties. Otherwise, you are responsible for getting to and from these locations.

If you are identified as a top candidate, verification of your education, which may include High School graduation or GED, undergraduate and/or graduate degrees, will be required.

90 Day Provision for Additional Vacancy:
If the same or an additional vacancy occurs within the Public Works Department in the same job title within 90 days after the start date of the top candidate, the additional position may be offered to another top candidate from the same candidate pool. This may include filling other vacancies with the same job title in other division/work locations within the City of Austin Public Works Department. Decisions on assigned selection may be made at the time of hire based on the business needs of the department.

Preferred Fields of Study: Data science, statistics, public administration, business administration, or fields involving qualitative and quantitative research.
